Shocking footage emerges of Chris Whitty being harassed in the street

Shocking footage has emerged of the Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, being harassed in the street by two men.

The images were described as “disgusting” by Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi, who demanded that “these thugs must be found and charged. Zero tolerance for harassing a public servant.”

The men appeared to be forcing themselves on Whitty as they posed for the camera, with one man grabbing Witty around the shoulders and neck as the prominent boffin struggled to break free of their grip.

They appear to hold on to his jacket before letting him go, at which point they follow him down the street laughing.

Witty is eventually embraced again by one of the men, as the Chief Medical Officer wears a disturbed look on his face.

Whitty along with Chief Scientific Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance, has found himself a major national figure over the last year as he has spearheaded the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The professor was accosted earlier this year in a viral TikTok video, after which he said: “In terms of being harangued, I mean the odd, young lad showing off occasionally happens.”

Response to yesterday’s footage online has been overwhelmingly negative, with some referring to the men as “absolute morons” and “feral knobs”, but others have downplayed the incident: “Excitable drunks want a selfie with the man off the telly. Yes it was wrong but if he feels threatened by this then get security.”

“Looks friendly, they just see a geezer from the telly and want a selfie” said another.

The Metropolitan Police have already responded to the incident and say they have the details of the men involved: “We’re aware of a video being shared online showing an incident in St James’s Park.

“Officers spoke to all those involved at the time and their details were taken. We are in contact with the victim and the circumstances continue to be investigated.”
