Labour deeply ashamed by “dildo butt pedo monkey” invited to perform in front of children

Labour politicians in the stronghold of Redbridge, East London have been left red-faced after a performer dressed in a multi-coloured monkey suit replete with exposed prosthetic penis and buttocks was invited to dance in front of children.

The rainbow monkey featured as part of Redbridge Council’s participation in the Library Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday. The national programme is funded by the government.

Labour MP for Ilford North, Wes Streeting has slated the decision to expose the grotesque dildoed ape to innocent children. Labour leader of Redbridge Council, Jas Athwal has also condemned the costume.

But on the day of the disturbing performance, the messages being put out were quite different with Redbridge Library tweeting, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it”.

The Guido Fawkes blog reports that earlier in the day, the library had blocked on social media locals aghast at the hyper-sexual display, deriding them as “lecturing Johnny come latelys”, likely a reference to the offending chimp being adorned in the colours of the LGBT flag.

Taking to Twitter, Athwal told Redbridge residents he was “appalled by the incident”, describing the performers as “completely inappropriate and deeply offensive”. However, as of Monday afternoon, only Athwal of Redbridge’s 51 Labour Councillor has made a public stand of note, and even then, the council has not retweeted his condemnation. The library itself has finally come out and labelled the costume “inappropriate”.

In an earlier outburst, Athwall raged: “This is disgusting. I have taken immediate action. Upon finding out, I contacted Vision [and they] confirmed that the contract has been cancelled, an apology is sought in the first instance and an explanation will be scrutinised by the council’s legal team.”

Today, Streeting sent a letter to the chief executive of Vision, the company organising Summer Reading Challenge events, in which he admitted that “this episode has caused significant damage to the reputation of our Council and the Borough.”

He added: “It has also left parents questioning whether our libraries are safe places for children to be.”

Members of the public were more scathing. One person asked the pertinent question: “How did it even get to that point?

“You’re telling me that not one person involved in organising this shitfest looked at the bloke dressed as dildo butt pedo monkey and went: ‘…you know what? this *might* not be that appropriate for kids’.”

Vision is understood to have hired London costume company, Mandinga Arts, which prides itself on its “extraordinary & innovative” outfits (not wrong there). Yesterday, the company tweeted an offbeat apology insisting it “never intended to offend residents.

“We respect everyone’s individual opinion with no offence to any part.”
