Surrey Police has been accused of being too much of a soft touch after footage emerged of officers seeking to accommodate warped climate activists who brought the M25 to a standstill on Wednesday morning, with some of them glueing their hands to the tarmac.
As raging drivers piled up behind them, one police officer was filmed talking to the extremists telling them not to hesitate to let her team know if they needed anything or if they were in any discomfort.
“Any chance at all any of you want to move over there?” the officer asked the protestors gingerly, pointing the roadside before informing them: “Individual officers will come to speak to you and they will make their own decision as to whether or not you are arrested.
“If you’ve got any questions at all, just ask,” she told the Insulate Britain members. “And if any of you are in any discomfort or need anything, just let me know and we’ll try to sort you out – in a nice way,” she added.
The actions of the left-wing group Insulate Britain have been blamed for a four-car pile up as vehicles braked sharply to stop in front of the road blockade. One woman had to be airlifted to hospital and is understood to have serious injuries as a result of the incident.
Surrey Police has refrained from linking the incident directly with the blockade but witnesses are in no doubt as to the causal link.
Steve Glenn, who was commuting to work clockwise on the M25, told The Telegraph: “The cars ploughed into the back of each other. It was so blatantly obvious what had happened. The standstill traffic was caused by the protest.
“One car was squashed into half its size,” he added.
Protestors were eventually arrested and the road was cleared, but not before some of those caught up in the madness had the chance to tell the activists exactly what they thought.
One lorry driver hits the brakes before launching into a furious rant: “Go find something better to do with your lives,” he says, calling them “fucking scumbags” as he berates them for harming businesses.
